The academic year is approaching fast — freshmen and experienced students alike are getting their devices and gadgets ready for the busy days ahead. We’ll tell you about some of the best iPhone features and how to set them up, so you can make student life more fun and carefree from one exam session to the next. Spoiler: you’ll still have to study, but these tricks will definitely make it easier.
Hear Only What You Need
The best way to relax and absorb material is to block out the surrounding noise. iPhones like the 14, 15, and others can help you with background sounds. Whether it’s rain, ocean waves, or a babbling brook, you’ll think, rest, and fall asleep better. To disconnect from reality, look for the “Hearing” button (in the shape of an ear) in Control Center, and if it’s not there, just add it. We show how to start playback in the illustrations below.
What if you’re sitting at the back of the class or the professor speaks too softly? Turn on Live Listen: it filters out unnecessary noise and highlights the lecturer’s voice — you won’t miss a thing. One catch: you’ll need to place your iPhone closer to the speaker and listen through AirPods. The setup and connection instructions are below.
Copy from a Real Book and Paste into a Digital Text
When every minute counts, a portable scanner is a lifesaver. You don’t need to manually rewrite or type out text to add it to your notes. Just point your iPhone’s camera at the board or textbook:
· Wait for the yellow frame to appear around the highlighted text and tap the recognition button (a frame around a page).
· Then, choose what to do: “Copy,” “Select All,” “Look Up,” “Translate,” “Search on the Internet,” or “Share” — there are lots of options.
· If you only need a sentence or word, press and hold the screen, select the desired part, and copy (or do something else with it).
Skip the Pauses
Recording a lecture is one thing, but listening to and taking notes afterward is another. However, there’s a nifty iPhone trick that will make the process easier: you can shorten the recording time by removing pauses in the lecturer’s speech. Find out how in the section below.
Apple Magic
A viral video from a Korean blogger showed him moving content between devices like a wizard. This is Handoff in action — a continuity feature available on devices from 2012 onward. With this setup, you can start working on your iPhone and continue on your laptop, or vice versa. All you need is:
· the same Apple ID on both devices;
· Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled on both;
· devices no more than 10 meters apart;
· iOS 10, iPadOS 13, macOS 10.10, watchOS 1.0 or newer.
This feature is supported by Mail, Maps, Safari, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and many third-party apps.
But that’s not all Apple’s ecosystem offers students:
· Universal Clipboard lets you copy text or photos on your phone and paste them into a document on your laptop. No extra settings needed.
· Instant Hotspot lets you share the internet with your MacBook or iPad.
· Continuity Camera turns your iPhone into a camera and microphone for your laptop. Everything you capture on your phone immediately appears on your computer.
· “Find My” will remind you if you move too far from your laptop. And if it’s missing, it helps you lock it.
· AirDrop, AirPlay, and AirPrint make it easy to transfer large files in seconds, cast your laptop screen to a TV, play music through speakers, print documents, and more.
Stay Focused on Studying, Sleeping, and Working Out
A notification sound during a lecture is a sure way to annoy your professor. But you don’t have to turn off your phone to avoid this. Just launch Focus Mode. Here’s what you can set up and how:
· Allow notifications from specific people and/or apps while everything else goes to the notification center;
· Customize your lock screen and homepage to minimize distractions;
· Launch auto-focus mode based on time, location, or specific apps;
· Control how your phone behaves during focus.
Forgot Your Notes at Home?
No worries — you can take notes on your iPhone and even draw diagrams. If you add “Notes” to Control Center, you’ll have instant access to them. Dictate your lecture notes using Text Dictation, and access them across all your devices and gadgets.
Or, simply ask Siri to help and create a note.
AirDrop: Share Notes with a Friend
Gone are the days of heading to the copy center with a friend’s notes or rewriting them by hand. Now, you can send any file, even the largest ones, from your iPhone to another Apple device in seconds with AirDrop.
Endless Apps
For example, Zotero helps you collect, organize, and use academic articles for essays. ChatGPT finds answers to almost any question, and Prezi is a great way to make a stunning presentation.
Small but Powerful and Functional
For those aiming to get the most out of their studies, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro are the best options. These models are true leaders in their field, and they’ll remain powerful and capable for years to come. The 15th version even has the Action Button, which automates key processes. Both phones feature top-tier specs like large storage capacities (up to 1 and 2 TB), LiDAR scanners, bright displays, durable glass, powerful batteries (up to 23 hours of use), Dynamic Island, IP68 rating, advanced data transmission interfaces, and much more. These smartphones are perfect not just for school, but also for work and play — many students work while studying, after all.
Good to Know: Not only iPhones but also Apple Watch and AirPods are considered top student gadgets. Smartwatches help you stay fit, multitask, and keep up with notifications without even taking your phone out of your pocket. They also track your health and help you get enough sleep. AirPods, of course, need no introduction: their spatial sound is incredible, and the top-notch noise cancellation helps you zone out in any setting.
