On September 9, Apple unveiled its eagerly anticipated new products. The headliners of the “It’s Glowtime” presentation were the new iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and iPhone 16 Pro, Pro Max. Let’s dive into what’s new.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus
The “younger” version features a 6.1-inch display, while the “older” model boasts a 6.7-inch screen. For the first time in the base lineup, two new buttons make an appearance—Action Button and Camera Control Button. The iPhone 16’s display reaches a peak brightness of 2000 nits and can dim to just 1 nit in darkness. Both models are designed with the potential of Apple Intelligent neural networks in mind.
New Design, Colors, and Two New Buttons
The first noticeable change is the new camera module. The lenses are now arranged vertically instead of diagonally. The panel is covered with tempered glass, which is 50% stronger than that of the iPhone 12. The five color options are:
· Black
· White
· Pink
· Turquoise
· Ultramarine
The Action Button is located on the side frame. A single press gives users access to various functions. By default, the button toggles the silent mode, but it can be customized to perform other actions like instantly opening the camera, turning on the flashlight, launching Shazam, and more.
The Camera Control Button for taking photos and videos features a touch-sensitive surface and will be supported by Apple Intelligence. There are four interaction types:
- Quick press: Launches the camera
- Short light press: Takes a photo
- Long press: Starts video recording
- Tap: Brings up additional tools
Interestingly, the Camera Control Button launches a function similar to Google Lens: press and hold, point the camera, and Apple Intelligence will tell you what’s in front of you—for example, it can even identify dog breeds.
Performance
The iPhone 16 is powered by the updated A18 chip, built on a 3nm process with 6 graphics cores. Memory bandwidth is 17% higher than the previous generation, and machine learning runs twice as fast. Gamers will appreciate the revamped cooling system, which is now 30% more efficient. The A18 chip is powerful enough to handle new AAA games, and for an even more immersive experience, you can connect a game controller.
Camera
The vertical camera arrangement in the new model isn’t just for show—iPhone 16 can capture spatial video for Apple Vision Pro. The main Fusion camera features a 48 MP sensor, a significant upgrade from the 12 MP camera of the iPhone 14. The sensor allows cropping down to 12 MP while maintaining aperture levels. The 12 MP ultra-wide camera with autofocus delivers impressive macro shots.
Apple has also increased the battery size in the iPhone 16. Combined with the energy-efficient A18 processor, the smartphone offers longer battery life.
iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
The 2024 flagships represent the pinnacle of innovation. The iPhone 16 Pro features a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display, which is 0.2 inches larger than their predecessors, the iPhone 15 Pro (6.1 inches) and iPhone 15 Pro Max (6.7 inches). Both displays support a 120 Hz refresh rate. Apple has dubbed these models “the most autonomous iPhones in history.”
Grade 5 Titanium Body and Four Colors
The Pro versions are crafted from titanium with ultra-thin bezels. They come in four colors:
· Black Titanium
· White Titanium
· Natural Titanium
· Gold Titanium or Desert Titanium
Performance
Both devices are equipped with the A18 Pro chip, also built on a 3nm process. The CPU with 6 accelerated cores (even faster than the M1) offers 17% more performance than the A17 Pro. The 6-core GPU is up to 20% faster than the previous iPhone 15 Pro. The 16-core neural engine delivers outstanding performance for Apple Intelligence functions.
What Does This Mean in Practice? The flagship models handle even the most demanding tasks quickly. Compared to their predecessor, the iPhone 16 Pro processes video up to twice as fast.
Professional Cameras
Many consider the iPhone one of the best smartphones for mobile photography, and the new models reinforce that reputation.
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max feature identical camera setups:
· Main Fusion Camera 48 MP
· Ultra-Wide Camera 48 MP
· Telephoto Camera 12 MP with 5x optical zoom, achieved with a tetraprism lens similar to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The iPhone 16 Pro now supports 4K slow-motion recording at 120 FPS.
Pro models also support ProRes, Log, and Dolby Vision, essentially turning your smartphone into a professional camera. In the Photos app, you can adjust frame rates during editing.
There are also new filters and presets, so third-party apps are no longer needed.
The Pro models also feature the new touch-sensitive Camera Control button located below the lock button. This button lets you control the shutter, zoom, and other settings with a tap.
The audio recording capabilities also deserve special mention. The Pro models have four studio-quality microphones and can record video with spatial audio. Pro versions of Audio Mix allow you to focus on sound in three modes: noise suppression, voice highlighting, and separating it from music directly on the smartphone. The sound can even be edited after recording.
