In September, Apple introduced the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus – the most awaited and discussed smartphones of 2023. Today we will see what is new in these iPhones and understand how they differ from their predecessors – iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.

At the start of sales, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are available in 5 pastel shades: yellow, pink, blue, green, and classic black. Probably in six months, another will be added another color – which is the usual practice for Apple.

Therefore, the new iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are not very different from their predecessors: an aluminum case and a module with two diagonally arranged cameras. But the difference is still there, especially if you hold the iPhone 14 and the new iPhone 15 side by side.

The edges have become more rounded, and the frames around the display have decreased. Smartphone has become more enjoyable to hold in your hands – this feeling is difficult to convey in words. Of course, fresh colors add novelty. By the way, the new generation iPhone has become more matt – for the first time in years. Since the iPhone XR, Apple has equipped base versions with a glossy color coating that collected fingerprints. Now this problem is solved.

Dynamic Island instead of «bangs»

The exclusive chip of the flagship iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max is now available in the base versions. This is exciting because Dynamic Island is not just a beautiful replacement for «bangs» with a TrueDepth camera and sensors. This is a convenient interface element that displays notifications and background activities. For example, you can sit in Safari, and the «island» will display the icon of the music you are listening to and the timer you’ve set.

Dynamic Island is interactive, so you can manage apps and calls directly from it – just touch. It is very convenient that the «island» changes size depending on the task. For example, in an inactive state, it is small and increases when interacting with it. Unsurprisingly, the exclusive technology of «dynamic island» turned out to be so successful that other smartphone manufacturers immediately began to copy it.

Just a reminder, in the base iPhone 14 and especially in the old smartphones Apple already outdated the cut under the front camera – «bangs».

Screen with an extremely high brightness of up to 2000 nit

The iPhone display is always considered one of the best in the class, and this year even skeptics were surprised. iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are equipped with a 6.1-inch Super Retina HDR display on an OLED matrix with brightness up to 2000 nit. This is an excellent indicator for the base models: last year only the flagship 14 Pro received such an update.

Bionic A16 chip – as in Pro-versions

The A16 Bionic chip from last year’s Pro models moved into the iPhone 15. There are 6 CPU cores and 5 GPU cores on board. The Neural Engine with 16 cores completes the picture. This chip, made using a 4-nanometer process technology, was initially designed with a large performance reserve, so it will be sufficient for the next 4-5 years. You will notice that the iPhone can easily handle demanding apps, and games and handles well all tasks. And while playing games, you will notice smoother graphics.

The new product also received an improved noise reduction system during calls, which can be turned on manually. Previously it worked automatically.

For comparison, the iPhone 14 is equipped with the A15 Bionic chipset, made using a 5-nanometer process technology. Compared to it, the chip in the new product is more productive and energy efficient.

USB-C port instead of Lightning

Great news for the Mac, iPad and new AirPods owners: you can now charge your iPhone with one cable. The entire iPhone 15 line is equipped with USB-C version 2.0.

However, even if you have been using an iPhone with Lightning for many years and have nothing else from Apple, the new port is still convenient. Because the market is full of other devices with USB-C: wireless chargers, watches, electric openers, toothbrushes and much more. You probably have the appropriate adapters and cables lying around somewhere. And they can also charge new Apple smartphones.

Another advantage of Type-C is that it supports the connection of peripherals: monitors, external disks, keyboards and many more.

Comparison of cameras iPhone 14 and iPhone 15

Looking at the characteristics of the camera, you can immediately see how one differs from the other. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have three cameras: two main and one front-facing. The ultra-wide-angle and front cameras are 12 megapixels, but the wide-angle one is equipped with a 48-megapixel sensor! For comparison: the iPhone 14 had 12 megapixels.

Interestingly, base iPhones can shoot at full 48MP resolution and save photos in HEIF format (unlike JPG, it requires less space for the same quality). Previously, shooting in 48-megapixel resolution was only possible in Apple ProRAW format. By the way, the ability to shoot in ProRaw and ProRes still remains the prerogative of the Pro versions. But most users don’t need it: this is a format for more professional use.
