With the release of iOS 18.1, iPhone users finally gained the ability to save phone conversations and even transcribe them. Here’s a guide on how to record calls on your iPhone, how legal it is, and which devices support this feature. This instruction is verified and doesn’t require any additional apps. Spoiler: it’s completely legal.
Who Can Use Apple’s New Feature
Good news: Apple didn’t make this feature exclusive to its latest phone models. Here’s what you need to know about compatibility:
· Supported Devices: All iPhones from iPhone XS and newer.
· Requirements: Update to iOS 18.1 or later.
There are no additional requirements. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any model of iPhone 16, you can even view call transcriptions using the “Notes” app.
How to Record a Call on iPhones with iOS 18.1 or Later
Another piece of good news — there’s no need to change your region. This feature works regardless of your location. Here’s how to enable and use it:
1. Go to Settings > Apps > Phone.
2. Select Call Recording.
Once enabled, follow these steps to record a call:
· Choose the contact you want to call or answer an incoming call.
· Once the call starts, a new button resembling an audio waveform will appear in the top-left corner. Press it and wait for a countdown to finish.
· Both you and the other party will hear a warning that the call is being recorded. This alert cannot be disabled.
· A recording indicator will appear on the screen, and you’ll also have the option to take notes during the conversation.
· To stop recording, either end the call or press the Stop button. The system will announce to both parties that the recording has ended.
Where Are Call Recordings Saved?
After recording a call using iOS 18.1, you can find the recording in the Notes app. Here’s how to access it:
· Open the Notes app and find the folder labeled Call Recordings.
· Each recording gets its own note. Inside the note, you can listen to the audio and, if supported by your model, view a transcription.
· Unfortunately, transcriptions are currently only available for English-speaking users.
To save the recording in the Files app or share it via email or messaging apps, press and hold the recording for more options.
