What’s New in Apple’s First Foldable Smartphone?
At its September 2026 presentation, Apple unveiled its first foldable smartphone. When unfolded, the device boasts the thinnest body of any iPhone ever made. Here are the key features of the iPhone Duo:
- Two displays. When folded, you can use the compact outer screen. Unfold the device to access the large inner display. Both screens can also be used simultaneously, for example, during video calls.
- A camera system optimized for the foldable design. In Duo Preview mode, the person you’re photographing can see themselves on the outer display while you take the shot.
- A20 Pro chip. Delivers plenty of processing power for using both displays, handling AI tasks, and running other demanding applications.
- iOS 27. The operating system is optimized for the foldable display and supports multitasking and Apple Intelligence features. For example, you can interact with Siri AI on one side of the screen while watching a video on the other.
- Longer battery life. Hardware improvements have extended battery life, so you can scroll through social media or watch movies all day.
The large inner display features an innovative nano-texture coating. It diffuses reflected light to minimize glare.
Why Did Apple Take So Long to Release a Foldable iPhone?
Apple hasn’t revealed why its first foldable smartphone is only arriving now. However, some experts suggest that the company may have delayed its release to refine the new form factor and ensure it meets Apple’s standards.
iPhone Duo Design and Folding Mechanism
The iPhone Duo features a Grade 5 titanium body with a mirror-polished finish. The back is protected by Ceramic Shield, while the front features Ceramic Shield 2. The second-generation protection is three times more scratch-resistant than the first. Apple’s first foldable iPhone is available in two colors: Night Sky and Star White.
A precision-engineered hinge ensures smooth folding of the inner display and provides reliable support for its central section. To increase the structural rigidity of the device, Apple has added:
- additional internal reinforcement ribs;
- ceramic inserts in the antenna components.
The iPhone Duo measures 117.8 × 84.1 × 11.3 mm when folded and 117.8 × 164.6 × 5.2 mm when unfolded.

Outer and Inner Displays
The foldable iPhone features two Super Retina XDR displays:
- a 5.4-inch outer display;
- a 7.6-inch inner display.
Both displays have the same aspect ratio and support ProMotion. Maximum outdoor brightness reaches 3,000 nits.
The large display makes it easy to interact with Siri AI while watching content. There’s no need to choose between tasks — you can handle both within the same interface.
Processor and Performance
The 6-core CPU in the A20 Pro is up to 20% faster than the CPU in the A19 Pro. The 7-core GPU delivers up to 40% better performance. Thanks to the new Dual 16-core Neural Engine, computing power for on-device AI tasks has doubled. Memory bandwidth has also increased by 50%.
Sustained performance has improved by 35% compared to the iPhone 17 Pro. This is thanks to the new chip working alongside a custom vapor chamber and an upgraded cooling system. The improvement is particularly noticeable during prolonged intensive use, such as running resource-intensive AI tasks.
A dedicated display engine manages both screens, ensuring smooth transitions between them.
The iPhone Duo is available in four storage configurations: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB.
iPhone Duo Cameras
The foldable iPhone features an advanced camera system with two rear cameras and two front cameras. Parents of young children will appreciate the Kid Cue feature. During photo shoots, an animation appears on the outer display, encouraging children to look directly into the camera for the perfect shot.
The 48MP Fusion Main camera lets you:
- capture photos at resolutions of up to 48MP;
- take 24MP photos by default;
- capture sharp images with zero shutter lag;
- photograph distant subjects with 2x optical-quality zoom.
A new FaceTime camera is located beneath the inner display. During FaceTime calls, you can show the person you’re talking to both yourself and what’s in front of your smartphone using the main camera.
The 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera also supports macro photography.
Battery and Battery Life
The battery consists of two cells located in separate halves of the device. However, they function as a single system. Depending on which screen you use, the device delivers up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and up to 31 hours on the inner display. If you use both screens equally, you’ll need to recharge after approximately 24 hours.
Fast charging is also supported. With wired charging, you can recharge the smartphone to 50% in just 20 minutes. Wireless charging takes 30 minutes.
How Does iOS Work on the Foldable iPhone?
The device runs iOS 27.1. The system is optimized for its book-style foldable design, so content automatically scales proportionally when switching between screens.
For the first time, an iPhone supports Split View, a feature previously available only on the iPad. You can now open two apps simultaneously on the smartphone’s large inner display.
